Great Fishing Charters - Fish we catch

  • Pink Snapper

Pink Snapper can be found in large bays in the open ocean, or in inlets. They can grow up to 130 cm long and 20kg in size, with a life span of 35 years. Their features are top, tail and side fins, which are pink. Bottom fins either a pale pink to white. They have bright blue spots on their upper body. A prized eating fish and charges once hooked. Good fun to catch.

  • Australian Herring

Frequent both the open ocean and estuaries. Grow to 41cm and .8 kg, with a life span of 7 years. Rough scales dark gray upper body, sometimes in bands, golden or yellow spots on sides and upper body, black tips on tail. A great fish to eat fresh. Strong, oily taste. Also a good fish to smoke. A real little goer on the line. Bigger versions put up a real fight.

  • Silver Trevally

Frequents coastal waters and estuaries. Grows to 94cm and 10kg, with a lifespan of 50 years. Upper body silver to pale blue, sometimes greenish hue or bronze, with a dark blotch on the gill. Many say the Silver Trevally (Skippy) is their favorite fish to eat. Everyone agrees that pound-for-pound these are one of the best fighting fish in the sea. Great to catch on light lines.

  • King George Whiting

Found in coastal and estuarine environments growing to 70cm long and 3kg, with a lifespan of 15 years. Elongated body with small brown to yellow spots, with yellowish brown tinge. White underbelly. Universally recognized as a top table fish. The bigger ones put up a real fight.

  • Black Bream

Inhabits estuaries and rivers, grows to 60cm long and 4kg, living to 29 years. Olive to silver or brown upper body, getting lighter towards the underbelly. When cooked taste varies according to seasons. Good fun to catch with a small rod.

  • Tailor

Inhabits beaches and near-shore reefs and estuaries. Grows to 110cm and 12kg. Strong jutting lower jaw, sleek, powerfully built silver body. Sought by many as their prize fighting fish to catch. To land the bigger ones you need good gear, and be prepared to lose even that. Need to be eaten fresh.

  • Tarwhine

Frequent estuaries and offshore reefs, growing to 80cm and 12 kg. Silvery or light yellow, with horizontal stripes composed of closely aligned dots of yellow and brown. A great fish to catch as they get bigger.

  • Cobbler

Habituate around bays, inlets and estuaries, growing to 91cm and 2.5 kg. Very dark upper body, fading to lighter brown underneath. Flat to rounded head and upper body, with a thick, eel-like tail. Thick, prominent whiskers or feelers above and below the mouth. A very poisonous spine in dorsal and pectoral fins, which can cause a lot of pain by just grazing the skin. Very nice fish to eat but be careful when cleaning.

  • Southern Blue Spotted Flathead

Inhabits near-shore reefs and estuaries, growing to 90cm and 3kg with a lifespan of 12 years. Mottled brown colour with dark bands or blotches toward the middle or end of the tail. Another sought-after table fish.

  • Western Australian salmon

Habitat: Coastal marine and Continental Shelf. Grows to: About 96cm and 10kg.  Reproduction: Matures at about 60cm and three to four years.  Life span: Around nine years.  Features: Smooth scales, yellow pectoral fin with black blotch at base, golden spots on upper surface.

  • Flounder

Habitat: Sandy and silty bottoms of estuaries and embayments.  Grows to: About 55cm and 1.5kg.
Reproduction: Matures at about 20cm.  Features: Several dark brown rings enclosing golden speckles on back, small  teeth.
